Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging. This highly stylized art form strives to achieve, by human hands, the simplistic beauty of nature. Koyasan has its own unique style of ikebana. It is rich in symbolism and religious meaning. A great variety of flora are used, such as flowers, trees, or bamboo. In the local style, artists create exactly ten layers, each representing a stratum of Buddhist cosmology. Specifically, the upper layers represent heaven, with the Space Buddha at the apogee. The middle layers signify humans, while the bottom is hell. By design, the arrangement is an allegory, signifying everyone's desire to reach perfection, like Buddha. | ||
